The Wednesday Club Café

Supporting Those Living with Dementia

We host two Wednesday Club Cafés where everyone is warmly welcomed for friendly chats, enjoyable activities, and tea, coffee, and cakes! Carers value the chance to discuss their concerns with a trained adviser.

One café meets at St Joseph’s Committee Room, Priory Way, Chalfont St Peter, every first Wednesday of the month. The other meets at St Peter’s Church Hall on the third Wednesday. Both serve the Chalfont St Peter, Gerrards Cross, Chalfont St Giles, and Jordans communities.

Providing stimulation and activity challenges helps those living with dementia stay content and remain in their homes longer, avoiding hospitals or care homes.

Carers: Spouses, Family members and Professional carers

We support spouses of people with dementia during challenging times, as they grieve the gradual changes in their loved ones and the impact on their relationship. Children also face loss, grieving for a parent who offered unconditional love and guidance through life's ups and downs.

We offer ideas to help carers, from signposting organisations and applying for benefits to coping strategies for challenging behaviour. We emphasise stimulation and motivation, as these bring contentment and joy, evident during our cafés where laughter and happiness thrive. Activities like jigsaws, painting, and quizzes can bring calm and a sense of accomplishment, tailored to what the person with dementia enjoys or can still do.

For carers, such activities provide a vital distraction and stress relief. We guide them on planning ahead, accessing benefits, council tax relief, or additional support. By connecting them to other cafés or activities, we work to prevent isolation, reminding everyone that they are not alone in navigating dementia.

People with Dementia
Living Alone

Living alone with dementia can be incredibly isolating, especially if the person has lost a partner who helped navigate life's challenges. As we get older things become increasingly difficult to cope with whether it is modern technology, the NHS system or just the pace of life, but having a companion helps do it together, often laughing together. Without this companionship, the struggle to cope becomes evident to both family and the individual.

We help to prevent isolation by encouraging social interactions. Bringing them to a café or group activities can provide vital company and lift their spirits. Human connection is essential to combat withdrawal and depression.

When they are with us we look at how we can stimulate them with activities with others, and what they can do at home. We advise families on planning ahead and using modern technology to stay connected.

It is important to point out as we get older we do often suffer with more anxiety, whether we have dementia or not, it is often because we are unable to perform the tasks with the efficiency we once did.

Families

Supporting someone with dementia involves the whole family. Each person we assist belongs to a unique network of loved ones. Families are encouraged to participate when possible, as sons and daughters often face the loss of parental support while managing their own lives. We provide resources and training to help, ensuring the burden is shared. Involving grandchildren can also be deeply rewarding.
